Worried about funding? You may not have to pay for everything.

Ontario and the federal government offer several programs that help pay for care at home or in a long-term care home. Below is a plain-language guide to the main ones, with a direct link to the official government page for each.

Getting care paid for (Ontario)

Publicly funded home care (Ontario Health atHome)
Who it’s for
Anyone who needs care at home, school or in the community and is assessed as eligible.
What you get
If you qualify, the Ontario government pays for home care such as nursing and personal support. Some community support services may have a co-payment. Call 310-2222 (no area code).

Family-Managed Home Care (FMHC)
Who it’s for
Children with complex medical needs, adults with acquired brain injury, eligible home-schooled children, and others in extraordinary circumstances.
What you get
Families receive funding directly to hire their own caregivers or buy services from an agency, instead of having Ontario Health atHome arrange care. See the FMHC page for details.

Assistive Devices Program (ADP)
Who it’s for
Ontario residents with a physical disability needing equipment for 6 months or longer. Income is not considered.
What you get
Helps pay for equipment and supplies such as wheelchairs, walkers, hearing aids, respiratory equipment and ostomy supplies.

Passport Program
Who it’s for
Adults 18+ with a developmental disability, approved through Developmental Services Ontario (DSO).
What you get
At least $5,500 a year to pay for support workers, community activities, life skills and caregiver respite. It works by reimbursement.

Special Services at Home (SSAH)
Who it’s for
Children under 18 with a physical and/or developmental disability living at home.
What you get
Funding for respite, hiring a support worker and activities that help the child grow and take part in daily life. Apply online.

Long-term care costs (Ontario)

Applying for a long-term care home
Who it’s for
Adults with a valid health card whose care needs can no longer be safely met at home.
What you get
All applications and admissions are arranged by Ontario Health atHome. A care coordinator assesses eligibility and helps choose homes.

Long-Term Care Rate Reduction Program
Who it’s for
Long-term care residents in a basic (ward) room who cannot afford the basic co-payment.
What you get
Lowers the monthly accommodation fee based on income. Apply through your long-term care home after moving in, ideally within the first 90 days, and re-apply every year (July 1 – June 30). Questions: LTC.RateReduction@ontario.ca.

Support for Veterans (federal)

Veterans Independence Program (VIP)
Who it’s for
Eligible Veterans, and some survivors and primary caregivers.
What you get
Annual funding for housekeeping, personal care, health and support services, grounds maintenance and, if needed, long-term care.

Most families start by calling Ontario Health atHome at 310-2222 to see if they qualify for publicly funded care. Many then add private hours from an agency like ours to fill the gaps. Our care coordinators are happy to walk you through it.
